Haiti Outreach - Pwoje Espwa  H.O.P.E. is a not-for-profit, volunteer organization based in Rochester, NY. The organization's primary goal is to work in solidarity with people in Borgne, Haiti and to stand by them as they struggle to build a just and equitable community. Since 1995, H.O.P.E. has collaborated with the people of Borgne to address the needs identified by its sister community. H.O.P.E.'s mission is to promote grassroots development in the Commune of Borgne by providing technical, educational, and financial support in areas of health, education, and economic development. Borgne Borgne is located on the northern coast of Haiti, 35 miles West of Cap Haitien a 2-hour ride in good weather. H.O.P.E. serves over 40,000 people in the town of Borgne and its seven rural districts. The lack of basic, functioning, infrastructures such as communication, sanitation, health care, water distribution, and transportation coupled with a very high rate of unemployment are the major causes of poverty in the region. Agriculture and fishing have traditionally been the sources of subsistence for people in the area. However., erosion, over-farming and over-fishing, as well as high population density have greatly reduced outputs. As a result, easily treated conditions such as malnutrition, malaria, tuberculosis, parasitic diseases are continuing problems and maternal and infant mortality rates are high.

H.O.P.E. supports community development in Borgne by cooperating with local grassroots community organizations on a variety of projects. These projects seek to promote empowerment and ensure sustainability through education, training, and economic development.

H.O.P.E. Health Programs

• funds a primary care facility, staffed by Haitian professionals
• Supports health care services for 700 people per month
• Provides health education programs
• Provides health outreach to outlying villages
• Addresses infant and maternal health through a perinatal project

Education Programs

• Coordinates training seminars in modem pedagogy for local teachers
• Coordinates a scholarship fund administered by local community leaders
• Supports local schools
• is developing a library/ resource center to be located in the town of Borgne

Economic Development Projects

• funded a rice and com mill
• cooperates with women's groups
• helped develop a popular bank to support small business development
• is working with a cooperative of fisherman to develop a fishing project
